Looting Attacks

‘The Plague of Looters’ AKA: the ‘Kindness’ of the Dem Left 8-29-25
In the recent years, many California businesses have suffered rampant shoplifting and even mass invasions of looters. Major shopping areas like Market St. & Union Square in SF, have been devastated. Many shops and restaurants, there, are now vacant. Not only has this destroyed family businesses, it has placed commercial property owners in a potentially perilous financial position.
The dangerous and filthy situation, of many major Democrat cities, has largely ended tourism and convention business. Office employees are fearful of the risk of thieves and bums. Parked cars are often broken into. “Homeless” bums get money for their drugs by breaking into cars, looting and robbery.
Police have their “hands tied” by a combination of defunding and terrible laws like Prop. 47 and Prop.57. Hard-left DA’s, in many communities, have been unwilling to charge such criminals. Police realize, that arresting looters and other thieves, is pointless as they will face little to no penalties. Under Prop. 47, the theft of under $950 per event, is only a misdemeanor, subject to a ticket. Previously, the theft of $400 or more was chargeable as a felony.
Under Prop. 57, convicted felons would be subject to early release. Prison serves three critical social benefits: prison serves to discourage repeat criminality, a risk of prison also discourages those considering criminally, even more, prison isolates dangerous, destructive criminals from the public for a period of time.
The victim’s last hope: Prop. 36. The weakness of this law is that in order to upgrade a theft charge to a felony, the thief must have been already convicted twice of the same crime. Even then, that requires a DA’s willingness to properly charge. Our own Contra Costa DA, Diana Becton, has publicly stated, that even if someone is charged with stealing more than $950, but they claimed they needed it, to pay for necessities, she would not charge.
The left tells us that these swarms of thieves are just poor people needing to survive! When has “need” become a justification for criminality? Only in the minds of the modern Democrat, are our Rights subject to a needs test.
The primary duty of good government is the protection of people’s rights and property. Allowing free roaming criminals is the beginning of the end of a society. A final reason for the protection of the citizenry is we do not want to be forced to resort to vigilantly justice.
